Top 10 Official Minifigures 2018 (review in description)

Posted by Christoph S

It’s this time of the year again. Here are my top 10 pics of official minifigures this year. I have to say, picking my favourite TLG minifigures was a bit harder this year than customs. There were so many amazing things, starting with the amazing accessories from the Costume party CMF’s to the extremely detailed Harry Potter minifigures (movable short legs!!). One thing that also needs mentioning is the shimmering metallic prints that we got with so many minifigures this year (Mera, Batmobile Batman,…) Still I had to pick my favourites detail-wise as well as personal attachment. The minifigure I was looking forward to most was Ian Malcolm from the Bricktober pack to add to the original character lineup, who I finally got last week. Still, my most favourite minifigures are these:

10) Han Solo from the Cloud City set. Improvement is key here. We have gotten this figure a lot in the past, but now it finally seems perfect. The details on the dual-molded legs, the proper torso and of course the amazing hairpiece. They have come a long way, but with the recent execution this particular character is perfect.

9) Batwoman (Rebirth). There were a lot of characters from the rebirth storyline this year, but Batwoman took the cake with the fantastic hair-maskpiece. Overall there is not much to see, but all the important details are there and the red soft batcape is a fine addition. If you look at the original however you can see that the designers went lenghts to make the hard-plastic hairpiece as close and as awesome as possible. Nice to see this kind of effort.

8) Gamora (Infinity War). This minifigure also has been there before in various outfits, but the newest execution of her IW suit is so detailed that I had to get her on the list. The updated faceprint with all the face-details, the shimmering tatoos and especially her vest are really well made. For this minifigure I also really enjoy the ongoing cape-print from torso to legs. Overall she is much improved from all her previous versions.

7)Erik Killmonger. To be honest, I would have never thought that we would get a minifigure representation of an outfit that had only so little screen-time. Still, TLG deemed it neccessary to provide us with a traditional African tribal mask that could come so useful in many places. The common faceprint is a downside, but they kept to at least make the torso very detailed and even provided leg printing. I like this minifigure much better than the Killmonger power suit and it also looks far more intimidating.

6) 2099 Spider Man. I think you all noticed my excitement about the new Spiderman line of minifigures. I can only say chapeau to TLG that they finally managed to provide characters for an upcoming movie actually at the right time, they always seem too soon or too late. 😀 This particular version of Spiderman has such an expressive faceprint and I really like the mesh print on the torso. Most of all I think the colouring is perfect, because making him dk blue seems much closer to the original than any black custom version that we have got so far of this character.

5) Sam Flynn (Tron). Say what you will about the size of the Tron set (it is tinyyyy!), the minifigures are simply amazing. There are so many details going on in this minifigure and we got leg print and arm print, which is not at all common. I am glad that they decided to make the fans happy with the minifigures, because the whole set is clearly a fan-centered product. I especially love that they have been able to capture the recognisable Tron colours with the minifigures, because the combination of aqua blue and black really makes the minifigure glow.

4) Lex Luthor (Rebirth). Now that we get closer to the countdown the decisions got even harder for me. You really have to have this minifigure in hand to capture the amazing feel it has to it. As I mentioned before the shimmering metallic prints have gotten pretty common this year, but this minifigure is especially well executed. I think so many little armor details on the torso and legs we have only gotten so far with the Iron Centurion and the new Batmobile Batman.

3) Vacation Joker (The LEGO Batman Movie). This humoristic approach of the Joker’s outfit from ‘The Killing Joke’ makes me laugh every time I look at it and it really shows that there were of course a few comic fans involved in the creation of this movie. This is definitely my fan-favourite of this list and the fact they decided to include so many funny details makes it even better.

2) Range Trooper (Solo). At first I have to say I am not a big fan of the movie. Still the designs for the new trooper variants were very nice and had a nostalgic feel to them. We also got some of the best minifigures of this year with the Solo sets (Rio arms!!). In particular this Range Trooper looks so amazing with his fantastic helmet piece, the fabric pauldron and the extremely detailed print. Easy to say, this is high up on the list.

1) Spiderman. My favourite Marvel superhero finally got a new comic design after all this years. It also shows that a minifigure doesn’t always need fancy arm or leg printing and can still look amazing. I really like the eyes, because they give this minifigure so much character. I also really like that they kept to the standard red and blue, I think the thing that is mostly wrong with the SDCC version is that it is dk blue/red.

Next up is my review of custom minifigures. I will just need a couple of days. 😀

What do you think of this years official releases? Which are your favourites?
